Left brain/Right brain

There hasn’t been a published post for a while… Instead I got nine long drafts that are nowhere near to be published.

So, in order to write something simple and short – I was sent this test from my friend in physics department of the university I went to.

Apparently, he’s a right-brain man, a man of emotions despite the fact that he’s finishing a PhD in Physics.

I stared at the figure for good forty minutes, and it kept rotating clockwise. Then I sent it to a few friends to find out whether it works at all.

Turned out it does indeed work and three groups emerged:

  • First group claimed that the dancer keeps changing the direction, constantly. This group was largest.
  • Second group saw it rotating in only one direction, but through concentration could also see the counterdirectional rotation.
  • Third group claimed to be able to change the perceptional direction too, but only through relaxation.

After trying for a while it turned out, that I can also change the direction, through very intense, physical concentration. The trick was to focus on the tip of the supporting foot. As soon as I relaxed my muscles and released the table edge, the damn thing started to turn clockwise again.

This is pretty weird, I had considered both me and my friend in physics department to be primarily rational men. I had written for a few hours before the test a text that I considered rational monologue. Am I not even able to separate logical discourse from emotional fiction?

Another thing that makes me think is the difference in reactions: what could cause it? Why can some people change the direction so easily and others don’t? Can it be that the connections between my brain hemispheres are less developed than those of other people? Looking back, it would certainly explain a few things in my life… :D

Nothing but questions… I think I’ll better go to sleep.
